Canopy Detail at Wilmore Park

Ambient urban soundscape inspires functional, artistic shade structures in Wilmore Park.

Commissioned to enhance Wilmore Park and the adjacent Square, these sculptural installations were designed to provide shade and protection. The vertical louvers at Square and horizontal louvers at Wilmore park are crafted to reflect the ambient sounds of the urban landscape. Depeña captured audio from the park, incorporating the bustling traffic and native bird songs into the installation’s form.

The process began with another project, at the adjacent Square. The studio designed, fabricated and installed louvers, vertical elements that served as the Wilmore Park’s foundational concept.

Louvered Waveform at Square

The design and implementation of the forms at both projects are deeply rooted in the site’s ambient soundscape.

Depeña employed an innovative method of capturing field audio recordings, which included the hustle and bustle of traffic noise intermingled with bird songs that were native to the park. This blend of urban and natural sounds was then translated into the physical form and structure of the louvers, ensuring that the art reflected the unique auditory character of the site.

Following the success of the louvers, a canopy was introduced as a subsequent phase of the project. The decision to add the canopy came after the positive reception and effectiveness of the vertical elements in achieving the project’s goals. The canopy, much like the louvers, was designed to complement the site’s architectural ethos and the natural environment, but it also served to further the narrative that the louvers had started. Through its design and the materials used, the canopy sought to extend the conversation between the built environment and the natural world, fostering a cohesive and immersive experience for visitors to the park.
